What it is

Employees want to check their own clock-in records, and the data lives in an access-control system whose interface belongs to HR and security. So the question used to arrive at HR one person at a time. The kiosk makes it a five-second self-service action: scan the action card, scan your own badge, and the screen shows that month's registrations next to your photograph, so the right person is looking at the right record.

Three decisions that make it a kiosk

The screen clears itself after thirty seconds, with the countdown visible. A kiosk that leaves a record up until the next person arrives broadcasts one employee's hours to everyone walking past; the timer is the privacy control.

The database query runs on a worker thread. On a wall-mounted screen with no keyboard, a frozen window looks broken, and the next person scans again and again. The interface shows progress and stays alive.

There is no login and no free-text input: the employee's own badge is the identity, and the kiosk only ever reads.
